It’s no secret that South Africa is filled with talented people. From singers to artists, the South African streets aren’t lacking talent. However, what’s most exciting, is that people are starting to follow their passions earlier than ever before. Just think about it- whenever you walk through Cape Town or Jozi CBD there is a young person performing. They might be singing, rapping, dancing, selling their art- you name it. What they’re really doing is pursuing their dreams. That’s exactly how Cape Town-born dancer Nathan Adriaanse has become so successful.

Nate is a self-taught dancer that was raised in Athlone. After turning down the offer to represent the U/13 South African football team in Brazil, Nate discovered his passion for dance at the age of 13. Although his family believed that he should follow his talent is sports, he realized that he needed to take control of his own future. Since then, he was dedicated everything to his dancing career. Once he started dancing, he just couldn’t stop. He was introduced to break-dancing first, but has since learned a variety of dancing styles. Nate is entirely self-taught and seems to only get better with age. Over a decade later, Nate has danced at venues and in competitions all around the world.

Over the past few years, Nate has danced in Australia, as well as in several European countries. The majority of this travel was because he worked with Showtime Australia with The Greatest Love of All: The Whitney Houston Show, which he notes is one of the highlights of his career- so far. He is currently doing an apprenticeship in Germany. He plans to spend the next 5 years working and studying to be a European-qualified dance teacher. While Nate Adriaanse is one of the top up-and-coming dancers in South Africa, he is also an inspiration to all of us who want to chase our dreams. Nate may be temporarily living in Europe, but he is passionate about one thing: Cape Town is the best city in the world.
