Art is such an important part of our society. It is a powerful form of expression that can tell stories about individual experiences, history, and society as a whole. What makes art unique is that, while each piece is personal to the artist, what’s depicted is oftentimes very relatable for others. That’s one of the reasons why people love art so much! Sometimes, they see a piece that perfectly depicts their own thoughts and feelings.
There is no shortage of talented artists in South Africa
There is no shortage of talented artists in South Africa. But there can never be too many, either! Each artist has their own personal style. They use different sources of inspiration, different mediums, different styles, and so forth. Unfortunately, art is still quite underappreciated. At Tholispani Space, we hope to change that fact. Our goal is to highlight talented artists from all around the country. Today, we will be discussing Jody Paulsen.
Jody has won several awards, including the Katrine Harris Print Cabinet Award, and his art has been showcased all around the world. His art has been shown in South Africa, the United States, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands.
At just over 30 years old, it’s safe to say that Jody Paulsen is one of the youngest sought-after artists in South Africa. Born and raised in Cape Town, he received a degree in Print Media at the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Arts in 2009. Afterwards, he went on to complete his Master’s in 2013. Jody has a very eclectic style and used several mediums in his art. One of his most recent collections featured brightly-colored felt collages that spoke volumes on social issues. In fact, that’s typically how he works. He has divulged his art process to several interviewers, stating that he has a series of thoughts everyday, which he writes in his journal and later turns into felt for his art.
Jody has won several awards, including the Katrine Harris Print Cabinet Award, and his art has been showcased all around the world. His art has been shown in South Africa, the United States, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands. Despite being so successful, Jody is under 30 years old. This just goes to show that if you are dedicated and determined, you can follow your dreams and be successful.
